California is on the verge of allowing hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants to receive driver’s licenses for the first time in nearly two decades.
The key question is how to do it.
The issue of granting driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants has raged in the Legislature for much of the past decade, without resolution, but fighting is largely moot now due to a new federal policy.
President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals gives a select group of undocumented immigrants the right to live and work in the United States for two years without fear of deportation.
California is laying the groundwork for extending the privilege to driving, too, for an estimated 400,000 immigrants…
“It appears that young people who receive federal deferrals will be eligible for California driver’s licenses,” the Department of Motor Vehicles said in a written statement Tuesday.
“But it remains uncertain whether clarifying legislation or regulations will be necessary,” the DMV statement said.

Kind of makes sense if you consider that some counties in CA are in a perpetual sate of paving and repaving roads now.
Whatever happened to rule of law? How did we fall to being governed by executive order and bureaucratic mandate? And why does nobody seem to care?
The rule of law went out when the transformation of America (by Obama) began. Candidate Obama said he wanted to make government cool. I guess the Democrat voters think it is cool.
I grew up in California (in east Bay Area) during the ’70s and ’80s. It was crowded then but bearable. I went back to that area after spending 20+ years in the military and was very disappointed that everything changed. There once was called a rush-hour on the freeways are now completely jammed most of the day, seemed like every inch of property is occupied with families living on top of other families. It honestly looked to be tipping towards a third-world existence. I decided to live in another state. I see that this policy is just going to add-on to the downfall of a once great and beautiful state…
The more this kind of thing goes on, the happier I am to have left California 30 years ago. Then, it was because of housing costs…now, it would be for many other reasons. The really sad thing about all this is that the Republican MAJORITY in the House isn’t saying diddly squat about it.
doesn’t each state require u to get tested IN THAT STATE to have a license there? at least that’s how things used to be
It’s funny how CA knows that number, 400,000, why not 500,000, 600,000, 1,000,000 lol sink already please 🙂
