Britain’s National Union of Journalists, joining the Loony European Left in condemnation of Israel’s “military adventures”, has voted to boycott all Israeli goods. The union, with about 40,000 members, is the biggest journalists’ guild in the UK. They’re giving Israel the South Africa treatment.

In related news, Alan Johnston, a BBC journalist, was kidnapped more than a month ago in Gaza. There are some reports that he has been executed. The journalists may hope the appeasement inherent to this boycott will help recover Johnston, or his remains.

The NUJ website is here. Their statement regarding the boycott is posted here. It’s the sort of relativist garbage we’ve seen too much of. For example,

It was pointed out in the debate that the year-long boycott of the Palestinian authority by the UK, the US and the European Union, not to mention the government of Israel, has led to a surge in the numbers of people who are unemployed, sick and dying because of the cessation of aid payments and revenue to the Palestinian authorities. This is a boycott of a democratically elected government.

Yes, Hamas is a democratically elected government of terrorists that stands firm in its announced intention of abrogating the regional peace treaties and wiping Israel off the map.

The Jerusalem Post observes that reporters in the region are expected to ignore the boycott, since to observe it would require them to remove themselves from Israel. If they moved into Palestinian territory, they might risk ending up like Alan Johnston.

I wish American journalists would be as forthcoming and declare themselves for the leftists they are. Other motions made by the NUJ included condemnation of “the systematic violation of human rights by the US military” at Gitmo and praise for Hugo Chavez, condemning “unjustified stereotypes of the Venezuelan president as a dictator who is repressing the local media”.

Some British journalists (see Toby Harnden ) have criticized the NUJ, saying the trade union has a childish fixation with trendy-Leftie causes , wondering if condemnations of Saudi Arabia and China will follow. Even the critics express concern for the plight of the Palestinians. I’m wondering if criticism of the NUJ is more about letting the cat out of the bag than a disagreement, worrying that full disclosure will make it more difficult to “do their job”, however they see the meaning of that.

I surely hope that these sterling Lefties of high principle will research all the technology, heavily concentrated in electronics and pharmaceuticals, and boycott those as well. I don’t know specific details, but much of current microcomputer technology was invented in Israel. Similarly, Israel has an outsized share of innovation in drug research. I do hope that these moral cretins will turn off their computers, pick up pencils, and avoid any medications tainted by Zionism.

So are they going to stop using cell phones? IMing their friends? Texting? Won’t be using any Teva pharmacy products? Yeah, right.

Ah, I see John had the same idea.
