It’s nice to see that we’re not the only ones who understand the absurdity of keeping the law-abiding from being able to defend themselves. In light of the VTech massacre, the Tennessee state house has done the right thing. Once again Tennessee setting itself apart as a state with a head on its shoulders 🙂 (HT Susan).

House vote permits guns in more places

NASHVILLE – In a surprise move, a House panel voted Wednesday to repeal a state law that forbids the carrying of handguns on property and buildings owned by state, county and city governments – including parks and playgrounds.

“I think the recent Virginia disaster – or catastrophe or nightmare or whatever you want to call it – has woken up a lot of people to the need for having guns available to law-abiding citizens,” said Rep. Frank Niceley, R-Strawberry Plains. “I hope that is what this vote reflects.”

While imperfect, the bill and vote is an excellent indication that some politicians understand the absurdity of keeping guns away from the law-abiding. This bill still has some steps to take, so everyone in Tennessee, make sure you keep an eye on this and makes sure your lawmakers know you support it.

I live in TN and am proud of this moment of sanity in the wake of VA Tech. It’s a step in the right direction. I also found out yesterday that the University of TN is already working up a plan to establish an emergency text messaging system.

Just a side note related to the Imus story—because it relates to Tennessee: I wanted to say this because in all the reporting it was rarely ever, if ever, mentioned that it was our Lady Vols that beat Rutgers for the NCAA Championship. (our 7th title) The context of his remarks were based on the fact that our ladies have a much more pleasing look than Rutgers. I made the same observation, just not in the same terms Imus used. (but I did used the word “rough looking”)

Also, the weekend of the game the Rutgers coach was asked about our nickname (the Lady Vols) and the use of the word “Lady.” She did not have anything nice to say. So I’m really mad that this whole thing has raised her and her team up as some kind of beacon for women’s sports when the real class act has been completely ignored. I’m so proud of Coach Pat Summitt, she started in the mid-70s and from the beginning set academic and behavioral standards for her players. She has built women’s college basketball and ALL of her players graduate. I would put that record up against anybody’s.

I have a conceal carry permit but rarely carry. I took evening classes a few years back at a downtown college situated in a not-so-safe area. It pissed me off that the area was known to be unsafe, particularly at night, and yet the school did not allow me, a law abiding female, to in affect defend myself against an aggressive male, whether he had a gun or not. I was always worried when walking to and from my car.

Watch over the next months, congress will not be as insightful as Tennessee
