Adventures in literature with Maynard

Tammy, wearing glasses for her recent FOXNews appearance, questioned whether the “librarian” look detracted from her glamorous image. A fascinating question! So…how do we feel about library gals? I’m guessing the image is relatively favorable to TammyFans, since glasses add 15 perceived IQ points to any creature. We’re the kind of crowd that considers this a good thing, don’t you think? Here’s an example:

A Very Smart Dog!

Isn’t that the smartest-looking dog you’ve ever seen? So just imagine what glasses can do for people!

However, in the larger world, librarians are apparently less favored. I say this because I find pitifully few romance books (this is the quickest way to gauge the tastes of a society) telling sordid tales of librarian misadventures.

…and note that the gals pictured aren’t even wearing glasses! I’m not convinced they’re really librarians at all.

Perhaps librarians are more closely associated with negative imagery.

Librarian

In any case, the librarian genre is dwarfed by the surfeit of nurse books. It seems that somebody out there must have a lot of nurse fantasies. This makes no sense to me. I had no sooner emerged into this crazy planet when I got slugged by a nurse, and I’ve been on the run from them ever since. But, as I’ve long since learned, not everyone out there is as sensible as I am.

    I’m a fan of mysteries. Maynard, you’re a mystery 🙂

Remember that the heroine in the two Mummy movies is a librarian by trade. She also kicks butt in both hand to hand combat and the looks departments. Glasses not needed.

I do confess to added interest in a woman who wears glasses. I don’t know why, just one of my hot buttons, I guess

The thing is, modern librarians are hip-deep in technology, everything from electronic books to nationwide internet-enabled catalogs. A breathless encounter between the stacks– as might have been done in the Seventies– could have been the stuff of a bodice-ripper, but in a modern library your protagonists end up wedging themselves between the self-collating copy machine and the cash card dispenser, and it just doesn’t have the same romance to it.

Funny thing about glasses – it seems the more you need them, the less sexy they are. Coke bottom glasses (like on your chihuahua) stir up childhood memories of Jerry Lewis’s dorky professor movies. The thicker the glasses, the less sexy. If it looks like you can breezily toss them off for some imprompu fun like a romp in the ocean or a pillow fight, then that’s hot, but if you’re on your hands and knees, squinting and panicked, looking for your glasses, then that’s geeky. Glasses have to be an accent or accessory if you’re a woman, and if a man, they’re hot when ripped off the face and used as an intimidating pointing device.

Never could understand that old saying about men not making passes at girls who wear glasses! What a bunch of hooey! Women in glasses are most often much sexier than they are without,… Get over that ladies,…. attitude, self esteem and confidence are what its about.

Ditch the glasses Tammy. They already know you’re smart.
