You’ve heard about the 6 imams removed from a flight out of Minneapolis after passengers reported suspicious activities. These passengers are now stuck defending themselves against a civil lawsuit brought by the imams.

Former New York Mayor Ed Koch has written this editorial discussing the “King amendment”, a proposed Federal law to protect tipsters who act reasonably and in good faith against this sort of legal harassment. The amendment passed in the House by 304 votes to 121. In the Senate, Senators Lieberman and Kyl and Collins have introduced similar legislation.

Koch notes that a majority of the New York State representatives in the House voted against the King amendment, 13 yea to 16 nay. The yeas were the 6 Republican representatives plus 7 Democrats. The 16 nays were all Democrats.

In the recent terrorist plot against Fort Dix, a store clerk had observed suspicious behavior and tipped off authorities. We’re lucky this man thought saving lives was worth the risk of a lawsuit. As Mayor Koch observes, two thirds of the New York Democrats don’t seem to understand what’s at stake, as they vote to keep this potentially-deadly burden on the shoulders of the good guys.
