Bathroom stalls or hallowed senate hallway? With Larry Craig around, it’s difficult to tell.

And with a little foot tapping, he’s off. So to speak.

Larry Craig reaches out to GOP colleagues

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho), who still wants to salvage his career and public standing after his infamous bathroom arrest, is clearly running out of time. He’s working on the criminal charges in Minneapolis, he’s petitioning the Senate Ethics Committee, but if Craig is serious about keeping his seat and serving the rest of his term, he’s going to have to find some Republican colleagues who want to pull him out from under the bus.

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) has rallied to Craig’s defense, but Roll Call reports today that the Idaho Republican is turning his attention to the other 47 Senate Republicans…

The embattled Senator, who has said he intends to resign on Sept. 30 unless he is able to have his guilty plea thrown out, wrote to Senators: “I regret the distraction this situation has caused at a time when the attention of the Senate, and the nation, should be on the war and other serious policy issues.

“Nevertheless, should you be interested in the facts of my case and the efforts I am making, I encourage you to review the enclosed,” Craig continued in the brief memo. “If you would like any additional information, please don’t hesitate to contact me personally, or my office.”

One senator wondered aloud what would happen if Craig actually made progress in reversing his guilty plea in Minneapolis. “I think we were all real happy to have the Craig thing in the rearview mirror, and to have it keep coming up again and again just isn’t a good situation,” the Senator said, adding, “What happens if he does get this thing overturned?”

I have a suggestion and a reminder: the Senate does not require a criminal legal finding to address an ethics issue. Secondly, the Repub Party should demand that Craig resign, regardless, if only because Craig’s hypocrisy and double-life pose a serious security risk to this nation.

I agree he should go but I do not think he is a security risk. A liberal GOP liar yes. Not a security risk. No more than Franks; or any other lefty.

The cover-up will get you into more trouble than the original charge. An attempted cover-up after a guilty plea will get you into more trouble than a cover-up of the original charge.
Larry Craig should now resign immediately for his terminal stupidity in pleading guilty in the first place. That stupidity makes him unfit to hold any public office.
Go get a job as a lobbyist, Senator. It pays a lot more.

  3. I agree that Senator Craig should resign, mostly for reasons that St. Thor above states. The sooner he is replaced by an honest, moral Idaho pol., the better. Get this behind us.

    Otherwise, the scene could be:
Craig: “Senator, may I have a private word with you, in here, alone? On a personal matter?”

Other Senator: “Uh, no, uh, I think I hear my phone ringing, Larry; email me, alright?”

Senator Craig IS a security risk and I can prove it!!! He accepted a criminal charge against him (one that he could have easily beaten) rather than take the risk of having his secret life exposed.

What kind of proof do you need to convince you that he is a security risk. We are not dealing with hypothetical situations here—he has already compromised himself to keep the secret.

Sometimes I think my head is going to explode.
