UPDATE 11/26: Pat S. has researched the three manufacturers mentioned in the main story below, and has determined the infant formula each makes. Here are the details and links. Only you can decide what is best for your baby, but if I knew even traces of a toxic and deadly chemical were in a product I would not use it at all.

***************

After months of insisting it wouldn’t happen despite proof China had contaminated their milk supply with the same poison that killed our pets, the FDA is now admitting melamine is in US baby formula. And the special thing? They insist it’s still ok for you to use. In one of the rare instances, I’m speechless.

FDA finds traces of melamine in US infant formula

Traces of the industrial chemical melamine have been detected in samples of top-selling U.S. infant formula, but federal regulators insist the products are safe. The Food and Drug Administration said last month it was unable to identify any melamine exposure level as safe for infants, but a top official said it would be a “dangerous overreaction” for parents to stop feeding infant formula to babies who depend on it.

“The levels that we are detecting are extremely low,” said Dr. Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. “They should not be changing the diet. If they’ve been feeding a particular product, they should continue to feed that product. That’s in the best interest of the baby.”

Back in 2004, the FDA said Chinese infant formula was too unsafe to use. But now it’s just fine? And now the freaks at the FDA tell you feeding your baby a chemical that has killed 50,000 babies in China is in your “best interest”?! This really is nothing less than obscene.

Strangely, the FDA earlier announced all US baby formula was safe because none were made with Chinese ingredients. They made that claim again today with this announcement, struggling to explain why melamine was discovered at all. Obviously the claim that US baby formula is void of Chinese ingredients should be reexamined.

UPDATE:

In visiting the FDA site to get more information, they still have an entire page devoted to melamine product contamination. Here’s the latest list. The last product is infant formula made in China. This new contamination discussed in this post is regarding US-made formula. I was unable to find a specific alert about the US baby formula. I did fund one report that mentioned the product–
