Obama and Cheney weren’t the only ones making a speech lately. George W. Bush spoke to graduating high school students in New Mexico. He feels liberated from that sense of responsibility when he was President. He told the students of an amused humbling awareness he experienced when he, the former President, was walking the dog in his Dallas neighborhood toting a plastic in hand.

A little late to the task, sir. We already stepped in it.

Bush: It’s ‘liberating’ to be out of office

It was a humbling moment for the former commander in chief: President George W. Bush was walking former first dog Barney in his new Dallas neighborhood when it stopped in a neighbor’s yard for relief.

“And there I was, former president of the United States of America, with a plastic bag on my hand,” he told a group of graduating high school students in New Mexico on Thursday. “Life is returning back to normal.”

Bush, in one of his few public appearances since leaving office in January, told the students that leaving office lifted a heavy burden.

“I no longer feel that great sense of responsibility that I had when I was in the Oval Office. And frankly, it’s a liberating feeling,” he told seniors from Artesia High School.

He ought to be feeling a very strong sense of responsibility for leaving us with a heavy burden. Will our lives ever be normal again?

I read that sentence with a bit of amusement. When Bush was in office, I didn’t get the sense that he really had any responsibility. Speak here, travel there, but otherwise just sit back and coast through the Presidency. Maybe I have this perception because of how the media portrayed him. Maybe it’s because he wasn’t a publicity whore like Obama. Maybe I just didn’t pay attention. The sad part is I feel Obama is showing more of a take-charge approach than Bush ever did. Unfortunately, Obama’s taking charge may lead our country to ruin.
