We discussed the continuing debacle of Michael Steele on my radio program yesterday. Now Liz Cheney, for whom my respect grows every day and with whom I will be speaking at the Smart Girl Summit 9/30-10/1, has called for him to step down.

Liz Cheney, daughter of the former vice president, chairman of Keep America Safe, and an increasingly prominent voice in national security politics, has released a statement calling for Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele to resign:

RNC Chairman Michael Steele’s comments about the war in Afghanistan were deeply disappointing and wrong. The chairman of the Republican party must be unwavering in his support for American victory in the war on terror — a victory that cannot be accomplished if we do not prevail in Afghanistan. I endorse fully Bill Kristol’s letter to Chairman Steele. It is time for Chairman Steele to step down.

Cheney joins Weekly Standard editor Kristol, former South Carolina Republican Party chair (and Steele opponent) Katon Dawson, and prominent conservative blogger Erick Erickson in calling for Steele’s resignation.  The controversy started after Steele was recorded telling a group of Republican candidates Thursday that the war in Afghanistan is “a war of Obama’s choosing.” “This was not something that the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in,” Steele told the group, adding that “the one thing you don’t do is engage in a land war in Afghanistan.”

The benefit of the doubt only extends so far. The man is doing more damage than good, and has to go.

The United States did move out of Afghanistan and focus on Iraq; when Ob did the reverse, it was considered a mistake. I don’t see where Steele’s statements are inaccurate as they stand. I heard the video, I see the sentences pulled from his statement. I still don’t see where Michael Steele is wrong here.
I question Katon Dawson’s interest in Steele’s resignation, as I would any former opponent who steps into a ring to call for someone’s stepping down. I am very careful about statements from such “disinterested” people.
Yet, I do worry about the good ole boys retaking the GOP. I am concerned that they are moving actively to displace Sarah Palin. I highly respect Liz Cheney and Bill Kristol, as well as Tammy Bruce. What had begun as a move to replace Steele early on by these very fellows, I suppose has become a necessity? I will follow more closely now that Cheney and Kristol have joined Tammy in expressing concern about Steele’s position as RNC chairman. I just hate to see one more Obama-target fall from “friendly fire”.
And, that is what I am watching more closely: Obama’s paybacks. We need to get the job down but we need to watch our backs that we may be doing the devil’s work, so to speak.

I wanted Michael Steele to step down years ago – can’t think of anything he has done right since being promoted to the top spot in an effort to show how much “diversity” there was in the GOP. It didn’t work.

If Steele doesn’t go over this incident, there will be another one. The man has a mouth full of feet.

One of the things I like about Liz Cheney is she has the same steely-eyed look as her father. I think she would kick some serious ass, both foreign and domestic.

  7. chicky says:

Yes indeed Liz Cheney says it like it has to be! Now all we need is the rest of GOP to start saying it.
