An interesting concept since he was hailed by the Obamabots as one of the greatest military strategists. Would be a little difficult to slander him. Wonder how Patraeus feels about the DB handing Iraq back to Al Qaeda?

President Obama whispered to a top fundraiser this week that he believes GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney wants to name Gen. David Petraeus to the VP slot!

“The president wasn’t joking,” the insider explains to the DRUDGE REPORT.

A Petraeus drama has been quietly building behind the scenes.

Romney is believed to have secretly met with the four-star general in New Hampshire.

The pick could be a shrewd Romney choice. A cross-party pull. The Obama administration hailed Petraeus as one of history’s greatest military strategists. Petraeus was unanimously confirmed as the Director of the CIA by the US Senate 94-0.

But Petraeus has categorically asserted that he has NO political ambitions. And Team Obama stands prepared to tie one of their own to “Bush wars.” A Petraeus pick could been seen as simply shuffling the decks of power in DC.

“He’s a serious man, for seriously dangerous times,” notes a top Republican.

A DRUDGE POLL on Tuesday morning showed readers split on if Romney should give it a go.

And the calendar is running out of days.

While Morrissey over at Hot Air isn’t so convinced:

Petraeus has steadfastly insisted for years that he has no political ambitions — and so far, he’s acted that way, too. When his time came to come home, Petraeus could have opted to retire to the speaking circuit, building money and credibility for a run at political office. Instead, he chose to accept an appointment to run the CIA, replacing Leon Panetta’s largely successful tenure when Panetta went to Defense.

Even if Petraeus had an interest in pursuing the post, he’d have to resign as CIA director to do so. That’s not a two-week notice kind of job. It would take months to get someone with Petraeus’ expertise in place, and also confirmed by the Senate. If Romney had an interest in Petraeus, and Petraeus had an interest in the job, he would have had to resign in May or June at the latest to resolve the practical difficulties of changing leadership in a time of war. I doubt that a man like Petraeus would leave his post without being properly relieved, especially in a time of low-grade war against terrorist networks, and even more especially to run against the man who appointed him to the slot.

Romney could just have been speaking to Petraeus about becoming Sec. of Defense or some other position.

Obama’s anxiety about Petraeus being VP nominee is likely because he doesn’t have any dirt on him because Petraeus hasn’t made any political scratch each others backs agreements since he hasn’t been in politics. One way to blunt Democrat machine negative attacks is to pick someone who hasn’t been in politics and a military leader fits that bill.

    Hmmm interesting idea.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think I’ve seen Petraeus testify, under oath, a single time in front of any Congressional Committee since he’s been CIA.

He was confirmed, then drove up the George Washington Parkway to Langley, and never heard from since.

Petraeus certainly would be head and shoulders above such recently mentioned characters like Marco Kardashian Rubio, Chris “Jersey Shore” Christie, and Condi “the School Marm” Rice. On the other hand, he’s still pretty much an unknown quantity in regards to his political and social beliefs. It could turn out to be a game changer and might be worth the risk. If I were Romney I would pull the trigger. I mean, the guy has to be more exciting than Rob Portman, Tim Pawlenty, or Bobby Jindal.
