Cow Tales: The First Elsie
by Pat_S on November 9, 2011A suggestion. If you find yourself near Plainsboro, NJ, stop by the original Elsie the Cow’s tombstone for a reflective moment. If you can find it. The Borden Dairy Company created the advertising icon Elsie the Cow in the 1930’s. At the 1939 New York World’s Fair, Borden displayed a futuristic milking machine using live cows for the demonstration. Although Elsie is a cartoon, visitors kept asking which one of the live cows at the exhibit was Elsie. Borden, ready to milk the public’s interest in Elsie, picked You’ll Do Lobelia, a good-natured cow, to be the first incarnation of Elsie. She became a star, touring the country in a custom made “cowdallac”. In 1941, on their way to Schubert...

Cow Tales: Where’s The BFF?
by Pat_S on November 2, 2011Cows have friends and undergo stress if separated from them. An animal welfare scientist suggests if farmers could keep cows grouped with their friends it could reduce stress and improve milk production. Good luck with that given modern farming methods. Northampton scientist discovers proof cows go moo-dy without friends A scientist from Northampton has found the best way to keep cows happy is to make sure they are not split up from their friends. Mrs McLennan said: “We know re-grouping cows is a problem, because there’s a high level of stress among animals as they try to integrate into a new group.” She now hopes her suggestion that cows who like to stay with their friends when they are separated...

Cow Tales: Lucky
by Pat_S on October 26, 2011Sauntering isn’t always a leisurely carefree stroll. For cows weighing over half a ton sauntering can lead to a “bovine emergency”, even for a cow named Lucky. Lucky for Lucky she has a kissable nose. Pregnant cow named Lucky rescued from Erie well Firefighters, neighbors and animal- control officers came to the rescue of a pregnant cow named Lucky after she tumbled 8 feet to the bottom of a well in Boulder County.Lucky was in a field near a livestock pen not far from 119th Street and Jay Road in Boulder County, west of Erie, when she sauntered onto a wooden platform above a well Friday afternoon. Her 1,200- to 1,500-pound girth proved too much for the structure, which shattered,...

Cow Tales: He saw my hat and hollered at me to come a-runnin’
by Pat_S on October 19, 2011Cows caused mayhem by dodging police, causing a traffic jam and smashing into a real estate office. Has the left’s organizing gone as far as the bovine community? Cows Occupy Wall Street? Who could resist a recursive acronym? If they were OWS cows, they didn’t fare as well as the herd in OWS-friendly New York. These cows were in Texas. Specifically, they were at Texas Tech. Texas Tech is home to an Animal and Food Services Center from where the cows made their escape. It is also home to the Texas Tech Ranch Horse Team. After unsuccessful attempts by others to capture the cows, the Texas Tech Ranch Horse Team was called in to save the day. Udder confusion: Cows...

Cow Tales: ‘Til The CEOs Come Home
by Pat_S on October 12, 2011Golf, sailing, mountain climbing, racing, these are hobbies you might expect for CEOs who need a break. Not Swiss CEO Jean-Claude Biver. He is CEO of, what else, a watch company who relaxes by herding cows and making cheese. Herding Cows Helps Swiss Executives Ease Boardroom Pressure “I always give priority to my home, to where I come from,” Biver, 62, said in an interview at his farm near Montreux, Switzerland, where his heifers were adorned with a traditional costume of pine boughs, bells and flower bouquets. “From here I get the strength to do my job.” “The biggest problem of a successful CEO is that sometimes he doesn’t know anymore where he comes from,” Biver said. “This keeps my...

Cow Tales: Raw Law
by Pat_S on October 5, 2011No individual has a fundamental right to own a cow or to consume any kind of food without government permission. So says a Wisconsin judge. Wisconsin is one of the most restrictive states concerning consumption of raw milk. Those wanting to drink unpasteurized milk circumvented the law by entering into share agreements to privately own a cow and drink its milk. A judge was asked to clarify an earlier ruling about owners consuming unpasteurized milk from a privately owned cow. Wisconsin Judge Denies Basic Property Rights and Food Choice The judge issued the order in response to a motion to clarify an earlier ruling that livestock boarding agreements between a farmer and cow owners were in violation of Wisconsin law....

Cow Tales: Please Leave A Message
by Pat_S on September 28, 2011People are so smart. We even made our phones smart. We use them to talk to others, send text messages and picture messages and connect to the cyber world. There are gazillions of apps such as the popular Angry Birds to download for our amusement. Cellular phones are omnipresent and, for many, the center of our personal universe. From time to time the greater universe decides it must remind humans they are vulnerable despite their intelligence and ingenuity. The omnipotent Powers That Be like to amuse themselves too. In a manner of speaking, they recently downloaded an app which we can call Hungry Cows. Here’s how the game works. Hungry cows knock down a fence and find something to nibble...

Cow Tales: Jazzy Cows
by Pat_S on September 13, 2011Jazz fans? Maybe. I’m thinking these ladies were captivated by the lowing tones of the tuba. Jazz band The New Hot 5 go viral after performing to herd of cows in France When one of the members of the New Orleans-style jazz band started to play When The Saints Go Marching In, the cows, who were grazing on the field, came together to enjoy the performance. By the time the rest of the band had joined in, the whole herd was gathered in a line jangling their cow bells to the music. I’m a little curious why the band was there in the first place. Cow Tales Series: Homeopathy On The Range
by Pat_S on September 7, 2011The European Agriculture Committee wants to spend 2 million euros (approx 2.8 million dollars) to test homeopathy as a treatment for sick cows. Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem and the European Parliament called for a reduction in antibiotic use in livestock. Skeptics question whether homeopathy deserves consideration, especially at such a cost in difficult economic times. Homeopathy (a.k.a. homeopathic medicine) is a spurious approach to medicine which some call quackery. (Yes, yes, in this case we could call it moo-ery.) The idea is to stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself by giving greatly diluted doses of a substance which causes illness in healthy people. Ultimately the patient is given what, in the eyes of science, is plain water...

Cow Tales Series: C.O.W.’s Gate Escape
by Pat_S on August 31, 2011UPDATE: It seems this post has had the “no links” rule lifted for animal stories only 🙂 Oh, the Irish sense of humor. Daisy had farmer Tom Grant bamboozled for awhile. Every night he locked Daisy and the other cows in their shed only to find them wandering freely in the pasture in the morning. A special investigator was called in to help solve the mystery. Here is the tale exquisitely told by an Irish newscast. Cow learns how to open gate Huh, Orwellian fashion? Was Daisy playing a prank on farmer Tom or is there a bit of blarney going on here? (Hat tip to imacatLR for sending in this cow tale. Cow tales can be submitted to me...

by Pat_S on August 26, 2011Cow Escapes Slaugtherhouse, Persuades Famous Radio/TV Personality To Become Vegetarian. Bella the cow was on her way to the slaughterhouse when the hauler driver lost control and crashed. Today Bella lives in pastoral bliss with her son, Mr. Rogers. A heartwarming tale that contrasts the ugly cruelty endured by commercial livestock and the beauty of human compassion. If you missed today’s broadcast, DO NOT miss the podcast. She was one of 26 cows in a hauler that overturned after its driver lost control in the early hours of July 22, 2010. Of the dozen cows that got loose in the moments following the accident, all but five were recovered and completed their journey to a Milwaukee slaughterhouse. Bella is the...
